Reflections of a Restaurateur

Gwendolyn Rogers of The Cake Bake Shop

An exclusive eskca interview with Gwendolyn Rogers (founder/owner) of The Cake Bake Shop, which was honored in our:
Tell us your origin story. How did you come to be involved with The Cake Bake Shop?

I built my first shop in 2012, opening in 2014. I have always loved baking and wanted to create a beautiful place for people to come celebrate their special moments in life. Now seven years later with two shops and a third one in the works, the dream of opening a magical bakery has become my life.

What were the biggest hurdles you encountered in your journey?

Everything about opening your own business is a hurdle, from financing to marketing to hiring and training your staff. You have to love what you do or you will never succeed. You have to feel the passion from the deepest parts of your soul – that is the only way you can overcome all the obstacles that will come your way.

What does the future hold for you and The Cake Bake Shop?

I am working on building my third location with a large production kitchen, offices, and a warehouse to hold all of my packaging and decorations for the shops.

What are your thoughts on the food scene in Indianapolis?

The food scene in Indianapolis is wonderful. I am honored to be a part of this city, community, and chefs. I love Indianapolis, I have never lived in a city where everyone was so kind.

What’s your best advice for aspiring restaurateurs?

Try to be prepared as much as you can and learn as you go. No one has all the answers – follow your heart on how to run your business. Be open to advice, but still follow your gut.

Our readers love recommendations! What’s your favorite item at The Cake Bake Shop?

We have a great savory menu and my favorite dish is the Crab Salad Sandwich. Fresh lump crab meat with lemon and chive on a brioche roll with crunchy romaine, served with our delicious thin cut French fries and homemade garlic aioli.
